چکیده

[1] The objectives of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Radio Science Gravity Investigation are to improve knowledge of the static structure and characterize the temporal variability of the Martian gravitational field relevant to the planet’s internal dynamics, the structure and dynamics of the atmosphere, and the orbital evolution of spacecraft at Mars. The investigation will utilize range rate and range measurements from X-band and, when available, Ka-band tracking systems of the MRO spacecraft. MRO will enable a considerable improvement in the spatial resolution and quality of Mars’ global gravity field. The low orbital periapsis of MRO ( 255 km) will yield gravity maps suitable for study of regional ( 10 km) structure of the crust and lithosphere. The addition of tracking data from the Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey spacecraft, also currently orbiting Mars, will be useful in decorrelating errors in spherical harmonic coefficients of the gravity field that will improve the quality of the static field. Studies of the low-degree gravity field combined with measurements of rotational dynamics will permit insight about the structure of Mars’ deep interior. Changes in the low-degree spherical harmonic coefficients of the Martian gravity field and in polar mass anomalies will be used to track the seasonal cycle of CO2 exchange with the surface. Measurements of spacecraft drag will be used to estimate density variations in the atmosphere relevant to weather patterns and aerobraking of future spacecraft. Tracking observations will also be used to improve the ephemeris of Mars and the masses of the Martian moons.

Density of Mars' south polar layered deposits.

Both poles of Mars are hidden beneath caps of layered ice. We calculated the density of the south polar layered deposits by combining the gravity field obtained from initial results of radio tracking of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter with existing surface topography from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft and basal topography from the Mars Advanced Radar fo...

Effects of Self-Shadowing on Nonconservative Force Modeling for Mars-Orbiting Spacecraft

Modeling improvements of nonconservative forces affectingMars-orbiting spacecraft are presented in this study. Recent high-resolution gravity fields enable the recovery of smaller signals in the radio tracking data, previously obscured bymismodeled gravitational anomalies. In particular, the estimation of the atmospheric drag experienced by the spacecraft benefits from the new forcemodels.More ...

Observation of atmospheric tides in the Martian exosphere using Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter radio tracking data

[1] Based on the perturbations of the trajectory of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter due to atmospheric drag, we estimate, using Precision Orbit Determination, the density of the Martian exosphere near 250 km altitude with much better temporal (and therefore spatial) resolution than previously possible with this method. Small longitudinal density variations are observed to be consistent over lon...

Usgs High-resolution Topomapping of Mars with Mars Orbiter Camera Narrow-angle Images

We describe our initial experiences producing controlled digital elevation models (DEMs) of Mars with horizontal resolutions of ≤10 m and vertical precisions of ≤2 m. Such models are of intense interest at all phases of Mars exploration and scientific investigation, from the selection of safe landing sites to the quantitative analysis of the morphologic record of surface processes. Topomapping ...

Study of the Martian Upper Atmosphere using Radio Tracking Data

Since the first in situ observations of the Martian atmosphere were made by the twin Viking landers, we have learned considerably more about its composition, dynamics and variability. Not only did the new data on global atmospheric densities generate opportunities to understand the atmospheric composition of early Mars and supply constraints at the upper limit of General Circulation Models, it ...
